  • If your side effects are severe, they might lower your dose of steroids.
  • They can also be used to treat bone weakness caused by cancer that has spread to the bones (advanced prostate cancer).
  • Steroids also reduce the activity of the immune system, the body’s natural defence against illness and infection.
  • Mixing alcohol with illicit or prescription medications is not uncommon, and the risks are often highlighted.
  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist how long you should avoid live vaccinations.

And if you’ve had surgery to remove the testicles (orchidectomy), these side effects can’t be reversed. Hormone therapy for prostate cancer can cause extreme tiredness. Fatigue can affect your energy levels, your motivation and your emotions.

Additional information about taking steroids

There has been very little research done looking at how to manage fatigue in the early stages following an infection. We don’t yet confidently know the scientific answer to whether managing fatigue in different ways leads to different outcomes in terms of recovery. Fatigue can interfere with every aspect of day to day life so learning how to cope with it, and feeling confident with helpful strategies, may help to reduce the impact of the fatigue.

  • Corticosteroids (steroids) are a natural hormone produced by your body’s adrenal glands.
  • You can easily become psychologically dependent on anabolic steroid use (meaning you develop an increased tendency to keep taking the drug even in spite of possible harmful effects).
  • However, you may not have heard about the implications of mixing steroids and alcohol and the potentially damaging physical and mental side effects this combination may cause.
  • High doses of steroids are often taken orally or as an injection, and are more likely to affect your blood sugar levels.

You may have heard of the term steroid-induced hyperglycaemia before. This is different to steroid-induced diabetes because it affects people who already have diabetes. When you take steroids, fat may be stored around the face, neck and abdomen.

Low levels of potassium in your blood

You may be given a special steroid treatment card that explains how you can reduce the risk of side effects. At your next appointment, ask your doctor or asthma nurse what your total daily dose of steroid medicine is, from your preventer medicine and any other steroid medicines you’re taking. They can let you know if you should be carrying a steroid card.

Most people who experience prolonged fatigue after an infection will make a full recovery. However, some people will go on to experience significant fatigue for a long time and may also develop lots of additional symptoms alongside the fatigue. In a small number of people, post-viral fatigue can develop into a longer-term or chronic illness known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS). Recovery from ME/CFS is variable and some people continue to have symptoms for many years.

Accidentally taking too many steroid tablets is unlikely to be harmful if it’s a one-off. They can be used to treat problems such as allergies, asthma, eczema, inflammatory bowel disease and arthritis. Find out more about the risks and side effects from long-term steroids.

Nicola felt “absolutely lousy” when reducing steroids but also “driven” to keep going.

Using a device called a spacer with your medication can help to prevent many of the other problems. They’re a man-made version of hormones, normally produced by the adrenal glands (2 small glands that sit on top of the kidneys). Steroids can weaken bones, which can lead to a condition known as osteoporosis. This condition makes it more likely that you’ll fracture your bones, sometimes after very minor falls or bumps.

These side effects tend to occur only after long-term use or with high doses. Anticonvulsants are medicines used to prevent seizures (fits). There’s no evidence to suggest that using a steroid inhaler during pregnancy increases the risk of problems like birth defects. You can usually continue to use this as normal while you’re pregnant.

Increased appetite

However, in older people who have also had chemotherapy, it can increase the risk of fracture, particularly of the bones in the spine (vertebrae). If you are at an increased risk of osteoporosis, your doctors might suggest a dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan to keep a check on your bone density. You might also be prescribed medicines to help protect you from developing osteoporosis. Anabolic steroids can be used in medicine to treat certain hormonal problems, as well as being used to treat some cancers, osteoporosis and other rare conditions.

Steroid therapy

If you have had a resection/ debulking procedure, we usually like you to remain on a minimum dose of 2mg dexamethasone once daily. For biopsies, this would be slightly increased to 4mg once daily. Steroids may be prescribed if there is evidence of swelling in the brain caused by a brain tumour. Evidence of swelling can be seen on the CT (computerised tomography) or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans which you will have had undertaken.
